By default, Windows Vista indexes the files on your computer and stores them in memory to speed up the time taken when a search of the hard drives is done.
This is a good feature if you never find your files and do a lot of searching to find what you need, but it also affects performance quite severely and if this is something you can live without, you should turn off indexing.
Turn off indexing:
- Click the start orb and click computer
- Right click the C: drive and select properties
- Uncheck the box that says “index this drive for faster searching”
If you have additional hard drives in your computer you can repeat the steps above to disable indexing of those drives as well. Windows search will still work if you do these steps, but it will take significantly longer, but the overall speed of your computer will increase.
