Slow Computer? Time For a PC Clean Up!

admin On March - 2 - 2010

Running out of space is something most computer users are faced with at some point. This is usually caused by a great deal of hard drive clutter, unused programs, duplicate files and temporary files.

So here I will show you what files you should delete from your hard drive to free up space, clean up your computer and improve overall computer performance.

Clean Up Your Temporary Folders and Temporary Files

  • Click Start – All Programs – Accessories – System Tools – Disk Cleanup, and run this tool.
  • Go to C:\WINDOWS\temp and delete all files in this folder.
  • Do a search for files with the extension .tmp on your hard drive, these are temporary files left behind by programs that are not stored in the Windows temp folder.
  • Empty the Recycle Bin.

Delete Old Restore Points

  • While you are in the disk clean up tool we found above, click the more options tab, in the system restore click “clean up” then yes.

Delete junk and duplicates files

  • Go through your My Documents folders and look for files you no longer need, like old documents, files you downloaded from the internet and other junk wasting hard drive space.
  • If you have had your computer for a while there is a good chance you have a large number of duplicate files, you could always go through your folders and search for them manually, but I would recommend you download Duplicate File Cleaner and scan your computer for duplicate files, this can free up GB’s of space.

Having many duplicates and files you don’t need not only wastes hard drive space, but can affect performance, make sure you always organize your files and delete files you don’t need and get rid of duplicates.

Uninstall Unused Programs

Nowadays people install more applications than they will ever need, trials, freeware or getting a new program to replace another, but never really removes them.

  • Click Start – Control Panel – Add/Remove Programs.
  • Go through the list and remove any programs you don’t use or need.

After using the steps above, there’s a good chance your hard drive has become deeply fragmented which could reduce performance, so you should defragment your hard drive to increase data access time.

  • Right Click C: Drive – Properties – Tools – Defragment Now…
  • Repeat for additional drives.

Another thing you should do is to download a registry cleaner and scan your registry for errors. Uninstalling programs using the Add/Remove Programs often leaves behind several files on the computer and can corrupt registry entries, which could lead to several system errors.

If you have never heard about a registry cleaner or the registry for that matter, read this article about the registry and registry cleaners and optimizers.

A rule of thumb is to use a registry cleaner at least once a week to fix invalid or corrupted registry entries.

So there you have it! By using the steps above you should be able to free up hard drive space significantly and improve computer speed as well.

Download Reg Genie now and fix computer errors and improve computer performance.
